Knee Surgery Recovery
Frequently Asked Questions
Navigating your recovery involves balancing rest with structured movement. Below are answers to the most common practical questions patients ask during their post-operative journey with Dr Matthew Liptak at the Adelaide Knee Clinic.
When can I drive after surgery?
Your return to driving depends entirely on the type of procedure you had, which leg was operated on, and whether you are driving an automatic or manual vehicle. As a strict safety baseline, you must not drive while taking prescription pain medications, and you must be able to comfortably perform an emergency stop without pain or joint hesitation.
- Minor Procedures (e.g., Arthroscopy): Typically 1 to 2 weeks, provided you have good joint control.
- Major Procedures (e.g., Knee Replacement, ACL Reconstruction): Generally 4 to 6 weeks. Dr Liptak will formally assess and clear your driving readiness at your post-operative review.
Need More Specific Guidance?
Because every biological recovery follows a unique trajectory, these guidelines serve as general frameworks. Dr Liptak will outline your precise boundaries during your clinical appointments.
